Fear City Chicago Haunted House Holding “Valentine’s Zombie Massacre Bash”

Fear City Chicago is holding an especially appropriate horror-filled Valentine’s Weekend event on Saturday February 15, 2014 from 7 pm to 12 midnight featuring music, dancing, cash bar and laser-tag zombie games.

What’s more romantic than killing zombies with the one you love?  For those wanting an exciting alternative to the mundane red roses and chocolates of the traditional Valentine’s Weekend events, the crew at Fear City Chicago Haunted House are swinging open their gates and hosting a special event featuring locally popular disc jockey (DJ Scarecro), refreshments and heart-stopping laser tag games.

Fear City Chicago Haunted House and Battle Royale Laser Tag are teaming up to offer a new experience for the adventurous this coming Valentine’s Day on Saturday, February 15 from 7pm to 12 midnight.  Open to those over 21, tickets can be purchased online at www.fearcitychicago.com for just $18 per person (or $20 at the door).  Those wanting to have some fun can blast away their winter blues by playing laser tag in the halls of Chicagoland’s award-winning haunted house with a cast of creepy zombies.  In the lobby, the music of DJ Scarecro will keep people dancing and entertained.  A full cash bar will be available for those looking for another way to warm up their blood on a cold winter’s night.

Fear City Haunted House is conveniently located near Chicago’s northwest side at 8240 North Austin Avenue (between Oakton Street and Lincoln Avenue) in Morton Grove.  There is plenty of free parking and the venue is easily reachable by public transportation and is just minutes off the Eden’s Expressway Dempster Street West Exit.  The event will take place in the huge lobby of the haunted house with the laser tag games taking guests into the back alleys and hallways of Fear City, enjoyed by so many during Halloween.

Chuck Grendys said “There are so many people looking for an alternative way to celebrate Valentine’s Day that we had to put our creative juices to work and offer something new this February” and Jim Lichon added “People interested in haunted houses and attractions are crying out for this event so we had to listen.”

National Haunted House Day - Make It Happen NOW!

Support the adoption of NATIONAL HAUNTED HOUSE DAY on the second Friday in October.

Take Action Now!

The growth in popularity of Haunted Houses has inspired us as producers, vendors, and fans of haunted houses to campaign for a national day in recognition of our industry.

Sign this petition and share it with EVERYONE YOU KNOW and ask them to do the same. Creating an account to sign takes seconds.  We need 100,000 signatures on this petition by 10/22/13.
Other ways you can support the creation and adoption of National Haunted House Day:
  • Send this letter to your congressman / congresswoman and add in YOUR information.  You can download an editable word document of the letter here
  • If you are a haunted house producer or vendor donate a portion of your sales on the second Friday in October to a local charity or community foundation such as the Don’t Be a Monster Anti - Bullying Campaign or another of your choice. Then tell people about it by sending out this press release detailing your actions and support of National Haunted House Day. (instructions are included in the release).  You can download an editable word document of the press release here.

More About the Initiative

Haunted Houses and the industry around them have impacted popular culture in a permanent way. In recent history, over the past few decades at least, Haunted Houses have been slowly and methodically extending the celebration of Halloween and Horror well beyond a single night in October. Attending haunted houses has become a staple “to do” for millions of people across the country during September and October.

We are artists, business owners, community leaders, charitable leaders, and passionate fans of our industry. In our initiative to establish this officially observed day we are united by a common vision and our love of the haunted house industry.  We ask you to join us in standing up together and requesting that members of congress adopt legislation to enact a proposition to make National Haunted House Day an officially observed day on the second Friday in October.

We further insist that haunted houses and vendors across the country support this initiative by contributing to charitable causes on National Haunted House Day by donating a portion of their proceeds on the second Friday in October to a charitable program such as the Don’t Be A Monster Anti - Bullying Campaign or another of their choice.

Sincerely,

2013 Season Preview

Tis the season, Haunt Fans!

Usually, we write about how the weather is cooling down. That hasn't happened yet, but Football is back, schools are open, and the calendar is flipped to September, so it must be time to prepare ourselves for the mayhem ahead! As we shake the zombies and creatures of the dark to awaken them from slumber, here's a few notes to wet your appetite for the haunting season that awaits us. As always, we expect the level of haunted entertainment to be raised higher than it has ever been!

Here's just a little preview of what to expect for the 2013 Season:

Friday the 13th
This year, we are blessed with the holiest of haunted holidays, Friday the 13th! Although it occurs in September, there are plenty of places that will be open to summon your inner-Voorhees:

Basement of the Dead in Aurora, IL
Fables Studios Interactive Haunted Attraction in Morton Grove, IL
FEAR City Haunted House in Morton Grove, IL
Niles Haunted House Scream Park in Niles, MI
Raven's Grin Inn in Mount Carroll, IL
Zombie Safari Hayride (An Extreme Paintball Adventure) in Tinley Park, IL

New Kids On The Block
This season, we have quite a few newcomers opening their doors for their first taste of blood and screams (oops...we mean, thrills and chills!). First, and most talked about is CarnEvil haunted attraction. Located at the Sears Centre Area in Hoffman Estates, IL, it will be debuting five attractions and delivering quite a night of fright. Brought to you by some of the minds behind former haunted attraction Dream Reapers, this attraction is bound to hit the ground running. Expect a debut like none other!

Other new attractions include: Dark Harvest Hayride in Plainfield, IL (brought to you by the minds that bring you Dark Summit Haunted House in Summit, IL), Terror @ 212 in Oconomowoc, WI (created by the minds that brought you Haunted High), Monsters of Mayhem located at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake, IL, and Pearce's Haunted Barn and Haunted Hayride in Walworth, WI.

The Cake
Let's give another round of applause to all of our award winners for 2012, as chosen by the Haunted House Chicago Review Team.

Best Haunted Attraction of 2012: Statesville Haunted Prison and City of the Dead in Crest Hill, IL
Best New Haunted Attraction of 2012: Abandoned Haunted House Complex in Mt. Pleasant, WI
Jim Warfield Acting Award Recipient: Stevie Calabrese as "Auntie Mom" from Realm of Terror Horror Experience in Round Lake Beach, IL.

Happy Anniversary
Congratulations to the following attractions celebrating anniversaries of fear in 2013:

Lombard Jaycees in Lombard, IL - 43 Years
Niles Haunted House Scream Park in Niles, MI - 40 Years
Wisconsin Feargrounds in Waukesha, WI - 10 Years
The Dark Side Haunted Adventure in Ixonia, WI - 10 Years

A Final Farewell
Last year, we had to say goodbye to some wonderful attractions. One of them being the long-time running HHC Top 13 attraction, Dream Reapers in Melrose Park, IL. After 13 wonderful years, they turned off the lights for the last time. We wish all the owners and staff who made that attraction so well known all the best in their future endeavors.

Also, Haunted High School in Oconomowoc, WI, had the last student graduate and let school out forever after 4 wonderful years.

This year, we are sad to report that Haunted Mansion and Asylum 13 in Bolingbrook, IL, and the Brookfield Jaycees in Brookfield, IL, have closed their doors and will not open in 2013.

2013 will mark "The Final Countdown" for a beloved attraction in Stoughton, WI. The Haunted Barn has been a wonderful family attraction that will stretch the limits one last time before they close for good.

Movers and Shakers
Each year, a few attractions move around to find the best "home" that they feel will fit their attraction. For 2013, one of the big moves was for Eleventh Hour. Their new location in Melrose Park, IL, will feature a massive 30,000 square foot indoor layout, with scenes that will reach 20 feet!

Another big mover is Fables Studios, who will be taking up residence with Fear City in Morton Grove, IL, this year. They will be offering their own individual price for each attraction, as well as a combination ticket. Expect big things from both of these houses this season!

Spook Hollow and MC Manor in Marquette Heights, IL, will be opening up for a third weekend, as well as opening a new attraction called "MC Nightmare."

Back From The Dead
For all of those that were missing their favorite attractions, have no fear, because two are coming back from the dead and are ready to scare you to death!

The Fear Haunted House will return for 2013 and take up residence once again at Navy Pier in Chicago, IL. They will be offering an aggressive adult-themed haunted house at night and a low-scare, family-friendly attraction during the day.

Trail of Screams in Rockford, IL will once again be deep in the woods in 2013, bringing the most crazed and horrified monsters to life like never before. Taking fear to a whole new terrifying level!

Stages, Screens, and Screams
Have any energy left? Need something to do on those off-nights? Ok, once you stop laughing, here's some fun ways to try and enhance your Halloween season:

STAGE "Wicked: The Musical" comes home to the Oriental Theatre beginning on Devil's Night (October 30th) through December 21st. MUSIC Tons to report! Kicking us off on Friday, September 13th, we have Riot Fest hitting the streets for the whole weekend. Nocturna and DJ Scary Lady Sarah spin into Metro on the 21st. Rounding out September, Hatebreed checks into the Orpheum in Madison on the 30th. Kicking October off, Gwar plays the Rave in Milwaukee on the 3rd. Five Finger Death Punch kicks down the Rave door on the 5th. Bringing back some classic, Hinder and Candlebox stop at the House of Blues on the 6th. The legendary Marky Ramone's new band, Blitzkrieg joins Andrew WK at the Metro on the 8th. In the mood to dance? The Hounds of Hell Tour with Wolfgang Gartner and Tommy Trash play the Concord Music Hall on the 11th. Kaskade steps onto Navy Pier on the 12th. Tech N9ne hits the Rave stage on the 14th. Going down? Sick Puppies says they will be at the House of Blues on the 16th. Rounding out the month, the Rave has the Flatbrush Zombies on the 17th and Twiztid on the 29th. Some after Halloween fun? The Rave won't let you down! The Devil Wears Prada sashays in on November 10th and Lamb of God is ready for the Thanksgiving slaughter on the 19th. PARTY While everyone has to attend at least one Halloween shindig, Madison's infamous, "Freakfest" will be hosted Saturday, October 26th. HAWKS The Blackhawks host their season opener and banner raising on Tuesday, October 1st.

(Although we intend for all dates and locations to be accurate, please check/research before setting off on your journey.)

2012 Halloween Season Preview

Hello Haunt Fans!

It has been a LONG off-season, hasn’t it? Thankfully, the date on the calendar now shows September.  AND if you are quiet enough, you can probably hear this year’s cast of monsters, zombies, creatures, and freaks awakening to terrorize your neighborhood.

Eventually, the weather will cool down, and that familiar chill will return. The kids will head back to school, the leaves will change colors, and football will once again rule the television.

Even while talking with different Haunt owners, the feeling of restlessness is shared. So many different attractions are chomping-at-the-bit with the chance to help give you a reason to change your underwear.

Here’s some news to help wet your whistle as we prepare for Halloween 2012. (We will continue to update it as more comes in.)

To begin, the biggest news of the off-season concerned long-time Top 13 attraction, Dream Reapers in Melrose Park, IL. After last year’s season, they were robbed of a good majority of their revenue from the 2011 season. To help recap their lost funds, Dream Reapers opened a Christmas-themed haunted attraction for two weekends in December 2011. Even after an outstanding performance and overwhelming support, the owners of Dream Reapers announced that the 2012 season will be their 13th and final season.

Haunted High School in Oconomowoc, WI, has also announced this will be their final operating year.

However, all is not lost. A few attractions are expanding their experiences for 2012. Wisconsin Feargrounds in Waukesha, WI, have added two new attractions, “Shadow Lands” and “Revenge.” Asylum Experiment in Villa Park, IL, is adding a third attraction named, “The House.” Abyss in Channahon, IL, will be adding a fourth attraction. Dark Side Haunted Adventure in Ixonia, WI, will also be adding a fifth attraction!

Congratulations to the following attractions celebrating anniversaries of fear:
Lombard Jaycees in Lombard, IL – 42 Years
Brookfield Jaycees in Brookfield, IL – 36 Years
Haunted Trails Frightmare in Burbank, IL – 21 Years
Henry Street Horrors in Pontiac, IL – 17 Years
Realm of Terror in Round Lake Beach, IL – 10 Years
Fear Itself in Mishawaka, IN – 5 Years

On the opposite side of that card, congratulations to our brand-new attractions Fables Studios in River Grove, IL, and Abandoned Haunted House in Sturtevant, WI. Have a great first-year!

Of course, each year has a few movers and shakers. Fear Asylum in Belvedere, IL, is changing their attraction to include a “waiver” concept. Screamatorium has moved to their new location in Poplar Grove, IL.  Screams in the Park in Rosemont, IL, now abandons the tent and moves inside the parking garage. Fear City in Morton Grove, IL, now joins with Hades to provide a new combination attraction, with proceeds benefiting the National MS Society. Psychosis in Elgin, IL, will be “kidnapping victims.” Last, but not least, CEP in LaGrange, IL, returns after a year layoff.

No news on your favorite haunt? Don’t fear! More updates will be posted all season long! Have a tip? Share it with us!

Want to enhance your Halloween season entertainment? Here are some movies and concerts that will keep your head spinning. (You have to supply the pea soup.)

The Big Screen

While no one knows quite for sure when Rob Zombie’s new flick, “Lords of Salem” will actually be released to the US, we do have a couple of highlights for the next two months of movie action. On September 5, Jessica Biel stars in “The Tall Man.” Then on September 14th, we will get the 5th installment of the “Resident Evil” series named, “Retribution.” Releasing on the same day, Elisabeth Shue stars in the “House at the End of the Street.” To lighten up the season, Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg have a chilling good animated time in “Hotel Transylvania,” which premieres on September 28th.

Heading into October, October 5th bring us three premieres. Tim Burton has his animated production of, “Frankenweenie,” Ethan Hawke stars in “Sinister,” and finally an interesting “mask” movie named, “V/H/S.” Not to be outdone, “Smiley,” another “mask” movie hits theatres on October 11th. As we head into the home stretch, we are given two more presents. On October 19th, the 4th installment of the “Paranormal Activity” series hits the big screen. We finish off the season, “Silent Hill: Revelation,” premiering on October 26th.

The Big Stage

The monsters of rock, Kiss and Motley Crew team up for a pair of shows at the Midwest Bank Amphitheatre on 9/7 and Alpine Valley on 9/8. The mighty Riotfest hits Humboldt Park Chicago 9/14-9/16, with headliners such as Iggy Pop and Gwar. Hatebreed plays the House of Blues on 9/19. Want a chance for some possible Pantera? Check out Down at House of Blues on 9/22. Finishing out September, Static-X plays a series of shows in Bloomington (9/24), Joliet (9/27), and Milwaukee (9/29).

Heading into October, if you want to see some REAL beards, check out classic sharp-dressed men, ZZ Top on 10/2 at the Chicago Theatre. Easily the highlight show of the season, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson take the stage at the Allstate on 10/11, and the US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington on 10/13. Waka Flocka plays the Congress on 10/21. Deftones at the Aragon ballroom on 10/23. If you can’t find the time to make the pair of Justin Bieber shows, don’t worry, there are other options. Close out your October at the infamous Freakfest in Madison on 10/27, or the Misfits at House of Blues on 11/5.

Regardless of where you scream at, keep checking Haunted House Chicago all season long for everything to make your holiday season the best yet!

From all of our staff, have a frightful and safe Halloween Season!

HHC Remembers George Carpenter

Friday, April 20, 2012, the Haunted Attraction Family lost a beloved member, George Carpenter. He was the creator, designer, and original owner of Nightmares: Basement of the Dead in Aurora, as well as co-owner of Skully’s Family Fun in Oswego, IL. He passed away at the age of 68.

Under his direction and vision, he created and operated Nightmares: Basement of the Dead, a haunted and terrifying journey through the basement of a 1900’s laundry building tracing the steps of Al and Imus Kilya.

In 2003, its first operating year, Nightmares: Basement of the Dead was chosen by Haunted House Chicago as their “New Attraction of the Year.” George and his family continued to perfect the attraction until in 2008, Haunted House Chicago awarded it their highest honor, “Haunted Attraction of the Year.”

George sold the attraction in 2010 and began developing a new family-friendly attraction with his family. The attraction is known as Skully’s Family Fun and launched in 2011 in Oswego, IL.

George was a very caring and passionate man about everything in his life. While most of those in the haunt industry may have only known him for his work on Nightmares, George had many other projects and interests, including monster trucks and his family. But, regardless of the topic, he shared his excitement with everyone around him.

We at Haunted House Chicago feel honored to have known him and called him a friend. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Special Event: Nightmares Before X-Mas

The day before Halloween, something very tragic happened. After a month of hard work and undying efforts, Dream Reapers Haunted House in Melrose Park, IL, was robbed. The felonious thieves managed to crawl away with the safe that held approximately $150,000 of revenue. The money would have been used for the lease on the building and to help pay their acting staff.

To help recover some of the funds lost, the owners of Dream Reapers have decided to revamp their attraction with a Christmas theme and open their doors for two weekends in December.

Not only has major media television and newspapers been great in publicizing the event, but others in the haunt industry have surrounded Dream Reapers with love and support. Other haunted attraction actors and staff members have been quick to jump to Facebook and spread the word like wildfire.

The Staff of Haunted House Chicago along with at least 20 other haunted attractions from the Chicagoland area showed their support this weekend. Some donated their time and staffed the attraction while others brought as many as they could and paid admission to experience the nightmares.

If you missed this past weekend, or just want another chance to enjoy some of the spirit, Dream Reapers will be open this upcoming weekend, Friday, December 16th, and Saturday, December 17th. Admission is $20 and not only will you receive an outstanding fun and entertaining
show, but you will be supporting a great cause!
