2012 Halloween Season Preview

Hello Haunt Fans!

It has been a LONG off-season, hasn’t it? Thankfully, the date on the calendar now shows September.  AND if you are quiet enough, you can probably hear this year’s cast of monsters, zombies, creatures, and freaks awakening to terrorize your neighborhood.

Eventually, the weather will cool down, and that familiar chill will return. The kids will head back to school, the leaves will change colors, and football will once again rule the television.

Even while talking with different Haunt owners, the feeling of restlessness is shared. So many different attractions are chomping-at-the-bit with the chance to help give you a reason to change your underwear.

Here’s some news to help wet your whistle as we prepare for Halloween 2012. (We will continue to update it as more comes in.)

To begin, the biggest news of the off-season concerned long-time Top 13 attraction, Dream Reapers in Melrose Park, IL. After last year’s season, they were robbed of a good majority of their revenue from the 2011 season. To help recap their lost funds, Dream Reapers opened a Christmas-themed haunted attraction for two weekends in December 2011. Even after an outstanding performance and overwhelming support, the owners of Dream Reapers announced that the 2012 season will be their 13th and final season.

Haunted High School in Oconomowoc, WI, has also announced this will be their final operating year.

However, all is not lost. A few attractions are expanding their experiences for 2012. Wisconsin Feargrounds in Waukesha, WI, have added two new attractions, “Shadow Lands” and “Revenge.” Asylum Experiment in Villa Park, IL, is adding a third attraction named, “The House.” Abyss in Channahon, IL, will be adding a fourth attraction. Dark Side Haunted Adventure in Ixonia, WI, will also be adding a fifth attraction!

Congratulations to the following attractions celebrating anniversaries of fear:
Lombard Jaycees in Lombard, IL – 42 Years
Brookfield Jaycees in Brookfield, IL – 36 Years
Haunted Trails Frightmare in Burbank, IL – 21 Years
Henry Street Horrors in Pontiac, IL – 17 Years
Realm of Terror in Round Lake Beach, IL – 10 Years
Fear Itself in Mishawaka, IN – 5 Years

On the opposite side of that card, congratulations to our brand-new attractions Fables Studios in River Grove, IL, and Abandoned Haunted House in Sturtevant, WI. Have a great first-year!

Of course, each year has a few movers and shakers. Fear Asylum in Belvedere, IL, is changing their attraction to include a “waiver” concept. Screamatorium has moved to their new location in Poplar Grove, IL.  Screams in the Park in Rosemont, IL, now abandons the tent and moves inside the parking garage. Fear City in Morton Grove, IL, now joins with Hades to provide a new combination attraction, with proceeds benefiting the National MS Society. Psychosis in Elgin, IL, will be “kidnapping victims.” Last, but not least, CEP in LaGrange, IL, returns after a year layoff.

No news on your favorite haunt? Don’t fear! More updates will be posted all season long! Have a tip? Share it with us!

Want to enhance your Halloween season entertainment? Here are some movies and concerts that will keep your head spinning. (You have to supply the pea soup.)

The Big Screen

While no one knows quite for sure when Rob Zombie’s new flick, “Lords of Salem” will actually be released to the US, we do have a couple of highlights for the next two months of movie action. On September 5, Jessica Biel stars in “The Tall Man.” Then on September 14th, we will get the 5th installment of the “Resident Evil” series named, “Retribution.” Releasing on the same day, Elisabeth Shue stars in the “House at the End of the Street.” To lighten up the season, Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg have a chilling good animated time in “Hotel Transylvania,” which premieres on September 28th.

Heading into October, October 5th bring us three premieres. Tim Burton has his animated production of, “Frankenweenie,” Ethan Hawke stars in “Sinister,” and finally an interesting “mask” movie named, “V/H/S.” Not to be outdone, “Smiley,” another “mask” movie hits theatres on October 11th. As we head into the home stretch, we are given two more presents. On October 19th, the 4th installment of the “Paranormal Activity” series hits the big screen. We finish off the season, “Silent Hill: Revelation,” premiering on October 26th.

The Big Stage

The monsters of rock, Kiss and Motley Crew team up for a pair of shows at the Midwest Bank Amphitheatre on 9/7 and Alpine Valley on 9/8. The mighty Riotfest hits Humboldt Park Chicago 9/14-9/16, with headliners such as Iggy Pop and Gwar. Hatebreed plays the House of Blues on 9/19. Want a chance for some possible Pantera? Check out Down at House of Blues on 9/22. Finishing out September, Static-X plays a series of shows in Bloomington (9/24), Joliet (9/27), and Milwaukee (9/29).

Heading into October, if you want to see some REAL beards, check out classic sharp-dressed men, ZZ Top on 10/2 at the Chicago Theatre. Easily the highlight show of the season, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson take the stage at the Allstate on 10/11, and the US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington on 10/13. Waka Flocka plays the Congress on 10/21. Deftones at the Aragon ballroom on 10/23. If you can’t find the time to make the pair of Justin Bieber shows, don’t worry, there are other options. Close out your October at the infamous Freakfest in Madison on 10/27, or the Misfits at House of Blues on 11/5.

Regardless of where you scream at, keep checking Haunted House Chicago all season long for everything to make your holiday season the best yet!

From all of our staff, have a frightful and safe Halloween Season!

HHC Remembers George Carpenter

Friday, April 20, 2012, the Haunted Attraction Family lost a beloved member, George Carpenter. He was the creator, designer, and original owner of Nightmares: Basement of the Dead in Aurora, as well as co-owner of Skully’s Family Fun in Oswego, IL. He passed away at the age of 68.

Under his direction and vision, he created and operated Nightmares: Basement of the Dead, a haunted and terrifying journey through the basement of a 1900’s laundry building tracing the steps of Al and Imus Kilya.

In 2003, its first operating year, Nightmares: Basement of the Dead was chosen by Haunted House Chicago as their “New Attraction of the Year.” George and his family continued to perfect the attraction until in 2008, Haunted House Chicago awarded it their highest honor, “Haunted Attraction of the Year.”

George sold the attraction in 2010 and began developing a new family-friendly attraction with his family. The attraction is known as Skully’s Family Fun and launched in 2011 in Oswego, IL.

George was a very caring and passionate man about everything in his life. While most of those in the haunt industry may have only known him for his work on Nightmares, George had many other projects and interests, including monster trucks and his family. But, regardless of the topic, he shared his excitement with everyone around him.

We at Haunted House Chicago feel honored to have known him and called him a friend. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Special Event: Nightmares Before X-Mas

The day before Halloween, something very tragic happened. After a month of hard work and undying efforts, Dream Reapers Haunted House in Melrose Park, IL, was robbed. The felonious thieves managed to crawl away with the safe that held approximately $150,000 of revenue. The money would have been used for the lease on the building and to help pay their acting staff.

To help recover some of the funds lost, the owners of Dream Reapers have decided to revamp their attraction with a Christmas theme and open their doors for two weekends in December.

Not only has major media television and newspapers been great in publicizing the event, but others in the haunt industry have surrounded Dream Reapers with love and support. Other haunted attraction actors and staff members have been quick to jump to Facebook and spread the word like wildfire.

The Staff of Haunted House Chicago along with at least 20 other haunted attractions from the Chicagoland area showed their support this weekend. Some donated their time and staffed the attraction while others brought as many as they could and paid admission to experience the nightmares.

If you missed this past weekend, or just want another chance to enjoy some of the spirit, Dream Reapers will be open this upcoming weekend, Friday, December 16th, and Saturday, December 17th. Admission is $20 and not only will you receive an outstanding fun and entertaining
show, but you will be supporting a great cause!

People's Choice Vote Terminated Due to Cheating

Due to the fact that certain haunted houses simply can't resist the urge to try to cheat and stuff the ballot box in their own favor (yes, we know who you are), HauntedHouseChicago.com is doing away with the People's Choice Vote. The idea was to let the public vote for their favorites; what we're seeing are haunted houses paying people to do a technical end-run around our system. HauntedHouseChicago.com would rather kill this feature than see it abused to mislead our users.

You can still use the Skull Rating feature and write reviews for the haunted houses listed on this site, but from now on, only the HHC Official Review Team will be rating the top haunted houses each year.

If you're a haunted attraction or Halloween event owner/operator and need help getting your site correctly listed or updated, or are interested in one of our Featured or banner spots, please review the information on this page and, if you still have questions or want to secure your spot, contact HHC.

If you are a performer, actor, vendor or otherwise have a product or service you'd like to offer to or through haunted houses in Chicago, emailing us here at HauntedHouseChicago.com is not the way to go about that. What we have done for you, however, is provide a current list of active haunted houses within 180 miles of Chicago, complete with their contact information. Please contact them directly.

If you have a question about a specific haunted house that's not answered on this website, HauntedHouseChicago.com staff members don't have the answer - the individual haunted houses that list themselves on this site do. Please contact them directly.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL submissions to this site - haunted house listings, edits to those listings, reviews, etc., are first reviewed by HHC staff before they go live on the site. In other words, once you submit something, you WILL NOT see it immediately - one of our team will check it for accuracy, appropriate content and other factors and then, if it's good to go, will approve it into the live site.

Luckily, that's easy to do (as long as you still have access to the email address you used when you signed up for your account).
  1. Just click "LOG IN" at the top of this page, then in the white box that appears,
  2. Click "Forgot your password?" You'll be asked for your HHC username and the email address you used when you created your account

Halloween 2010

We made it. Another Halloween is finally upon us! AND just when we thought we were going to have spend it in our shorts and flip-flops, Mother Nature rears her head and the Earth begins to freeze once more.

As we celebrate this special time of year, take some time to reflect on the true history and meaning of Halloween.

Take a look at this article from History Channel’s Halloween history:

Halloween, celebrated each year on October 31, is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today. Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity and life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts. The Celtic holiday of Samhain, the Catholic Hallowmas period of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day and the Roman festival of Feralia all influenced the modern holiday of Halloween. In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its religious connotation, becoming a more secular community-based children's holiday. Although the superstitions and beliefs surrounding Halloween may have evolved over the years, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people can still look forward to parades, costumes and sweet treats to usher in the winter season.

You can read more here: http://www.history.com/topics/halloween or here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween

So, whether this Halloween season was about trick-or-treating, haunted housing, dressing in costume, carving pumpkins, or parties, we hope that it was everything that you hoped for and more!

Thank you for joining us this and every season! We hope you enjoyed reading our articles and content as much as we enjoyed providing them.

From all of us at Haunted House Chicago to all of you and yours, we wish you a very safe, haunted, and Happy Halloween!

AND stay tuned for the announcement of the 2010 Critics Top 13, Jim Warfield Acting Award recipient, and the 2010 People’s Choice Award!

New Award

Haunted House Chicago is proud to announce the addition of a new category to their award system.

Currently, we offer two categories of awards:
-Haunted Attraction of the Year: Critic’s Choice
-Haunted Attraction of the Year: People’s Choice

Starting in 2010, we will be adding an annual award for the best haunted attraction actor or actress.

Because of his outstanding contributions to this field, the award will hereby be dedicated and known as:

The Jim Warfield Acting Award

Since 1987, Jim Warfield has been guiding groups of tours through his one-of-a-kind 19th century home, Raven’s Grin Inn. Besides being the designer and decorator, Jim is also the main star of his attraction, in which he performs multiple vaudeville-esque routines nearly every night of the year. Relying on wit and wisdom, Jim entertains thousands of guests annually with humor and history.

Description & Criteria

Entertaining patrons of a haunted attraction is one of the toughest jobs around. Since each individual has a different set of fears, actors and actresses rarely have more than a few moments to capture one’s attention.

This award is to recognize the best actor or actress from each haunting season who has excelled above and beyond in their individual performance.

This award is eligible for any employee from every attraction reviewed by the Haunted House Chicago Review Staff, with exception to ownership/top level management.

Stay tuned for the announcement on October 31, 2010!

Updating for the 2010 Haunt Season

Our programmer tells us he's ready to implement all the tweaks and updates we've requested for HauntedHouseChicago.com for the 2010 season. This will include a vastly improved and more intuitive interface, wiping 2009's ratings and reviews to make way for 2010's, and a host of other little touches and tweaks that'll make the site... well, just plain BETTER. If it acts weird today, be patient - it's having its brain replaced!

IGOR! PUT THAT BRAIN DOWN! Sorry, folks - gotta run...

2010 Haunting Season Primer

Hello Haunt Fans! As the grill still sizzles, football begins to grace our televisions, and the weather quickly turns from 90 to 60, one doesn't need many reminders that fall is right around the corner. Technically speaking, the celestial season doesn't start until September 22nd, the autumn equinox. (It is also the first preseason game for the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks.) BUT, everyone knows the REAL "season" starts Labor Day weekend. Haunt Season is finally upon us.

As each Haunted Attraction dusts off their cobwebs... or applies more, props are being tuned up and actors trained for the next two months. What can we expect this season? First guess is: The bar to be raised. Each year, haunt owners try to out-do each other and this year should be no different. EXCEPT that with some new players & old veterans in the game this year, competition is expected to be at its finest.

Lets take a look at some thoughts for the 2010 Season.

The Cake
First, another round of applause for the 2009 Critics Choice, Realm of Terror in Round Lake Beach, IL, as well one for the 2009 HHC Users Vote Choice, Disturbia: Torment of Fears in Addison, IL. How will they follow up to the outstanding year they each had?

Return of a Legend
The man, myth, and genius who brought The Asylum Experience to Berwyn, IL, is back... and so is his house! After joining forces with the chainsaw-wielding Spike Mike, Dave Link and company not only come roaring back into the industry after a 10+ year absence, but also do it by taking over the Odeum in Villa Park, a long-time classic haunt location. Billed now as the Asylum Xperiment, the nightmares of lunatics will run wild once again.

Loose Ends
There are a few things we didn’t get to say at the end of last season, but didn’t forget about.

First, congratulations to the Wheaton Jaycees. As they hung up their masks after the 2009 season, memories from their attractions through the years will live on in the patrons that have experienced the methods of their madness. A job well done to Jeff Barcalow and company.

We had two haunts that had new locations in 2009 that we didn’t get to properly recognize. Dungeon of Doom should be settled nicely in their new industrial factory in Zion, IL. As they begin their 2nd year, expect the terror levels to rise and the show to get even more intense. AND Evil Intentions should be able to “close the lid” on any problems as they begin their 2nd year in their 1890’s casket factory. (No, not a prop company.)

Congratulations to Niles Scream Park in Niles, MI, who welcomed their 1,200,000th patron on October 19, 2009! (Yes, that says 1.2 million)

Lordy, Lordy: Look’s Who’s 40!
Congratulations to the Lombard Jaycees who begin their 40th year of haunting in 2010. (And no, that is not a typo!) As the longest-running haunting attraction in our area, we at Haunted House Chicago salute you and hope you have another 40 more! Keep up the great work!

Not too far behind them, the Brookfield Jaycees celebrate their 34th year of haunting! AND last, but not least, Haunted Trails Frightmare is celebrating their 20th year of haunting as well! Congratulations to everyone on the years of fright!

Silver Screams
From the minds (& bodies) that brought you Statesville Haunted Prison, City of the Dead, and Fear at Navy Pier, comes a new feature-film complete with comedy, horror, and Robert Englund! (Yes, kids, that’s Freddy Krueger.) Check out: The Moleman of Belmont Avenue at MoleManMovie.com.

Welcome to Hollywood
Congrats to the Dream Reapers crew for being featured on Travel Channel’s October 2009 edition of “America Haunts”.

Also, congratulations to the Zombie Army Productions team for their Zombie Prom being featured on G4’s, “Attack of the Show”!

Magazine Mentions
Congratulations to Amenti Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, IL, Fear Itself in Mishawaka, IN, Wisconsin Feargrounds in Waukesha, WI, Fear at Navy Pier in Chicago, IL, and Statesville Haunted Prison in Crest Hill, IL, for being recognized by 13th Hour Magazine in their 2009 Showcase of Haunts.

Additional congratulations to Wisconsin Feargrounds, Fear Itself, and Fear at Navy Pier for being featured in Haunted Attraction Magazine’s 25 Must-See Haunts.

Even more congratulations to Raven’s Grin Inn in Mt. Carroll, IL, for being featured in Chicago Magazine. (Did you know Raven’s Grin has also been featured in Time Magazine and on PBS, and the National Geographic Channel, to name a few?)

AND a final congratulations to Dream Reapers in Melrose Park, IL, for being the only Chicagoland-area haunted attraction selected to Hauntworld’s 2009 Top 31 Haunted Houses.

Movers (& Shakers)
There are only a few houses that have new locations this year. Psychosis is now in Elgin, IL. Hotel Massacre now makes their bed in Naperville, IL. AND you can drop into the Abyss now at the Dollinger Family Farm in Channahon, IL.

Also, we are sad to report that Trail of Screams in Stillman Valley, IL, is closed for 2010. But, it is scheduled to reopen in 2011.

Scout Salute
To help commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, many haunted attractions are setting up special features and discounts, exclusively for Scouts that come dressed in their uniforms. For example, 11th Hour in Elk Grove Village, IL, is offering a $10-off coupon, among several others. Jonamac Orchard Haunted Corn Maze in Malta, IL, even designed this year’s maze in the shape of a Boy Scout Badge.

New on the Block
We have a few newcomers to the HHC family. Please welcome Amhurst Asylum in Valparaiso, IN, and Torture Point in Crete, IL!

And now, another outstanding season is almost underway!

Reviews begin Saturday, September 18, 2010! Make sure you stay tuned to the Twitter feed for up-to-the-minute updates:

From The Creator of Days of the Living Dead

Hi Guys!

I'm sending out this email as a last ditch attempt to achieve my goal to make my latest project Days of the Living Dead possible.  It's a haunted house reality web series and I just put together a really cool trailer for it that you can check out on Youtube here: http://bit.ly/blJ8sk

The fundraising deadline for my project ENDS in 4 days.  If I can convince 255 nice people such as yourselves to pitch in $25 each then I can fund the show.  If not, then we wont receive any funding, the project is on Kickstarter.com which is and all or nothing fundraising site.

I would sincerely appreciate any help you might be able to offer me in order to make my goal and would be honored for your support!

Here is the link to my project's page: http://bit.ly/blJ8sk

Thank you all so very much!

Best,

Jayme Joyce

Getting Ready fo Halloween 2010

Zombie Army Productions engaged the services of a programmer today to update, enhance and improve HauntedHouseChicago.com for the 2010 season. We learned a lot from last year and you can look forward to a better, smoother, easier-to-understand-and-use website in the next month or so. Bear with us if anything stops working briefly or looks weird!

Haunt owners - be sure to update your listings from last year (or create a listing if you haven't already)!

New Chicago-Based A&E Ghosthunting Show : Paranormal Cops

PARANORMAL COPS™ follows a group of larger-than-life cops who walk one beat during the day as real-life Chicago-area police officers and another at night when they apply their forensic and investigative expertise to paranormal casework.

Responding to the pleas of people who are victimized by distressing and inexplicable activities in their homes and workplaces, these cops bring their no-nonsense approach to hunting ghosts and real-life police skills to separate the fact from fiction - and often happen upon results much scarier than expected.

As they investigate, the team will also uncover the dark underworld of Chicago’s sordid history, which will both inform and enrich their cases as they seek to rid people of the fears that plague them.

Days of the Living Dead Episodes 1-7

What is the Zombie Army? It's a rag tag group of renegade actors, artists, technical directors and filmmakers working together to produce one of the largest and most heralded haunted houses in the country, Statesville Haunted Prison*. This year, like every year, will be the Army's biggest year yet and there is a lot at stake. Days of the Living Dead chronicles the hard work, creativity and absolute insanity that the people who like to scare you put into the job.

*Zombie Army Productions also produces The Fear Haunted House at Navy Pier and has made several films in Chicago, all in various stages of production/distribution. This series focuses on Statesville.

Days of the Living Dead is a joint production of Zombie Army Productions and Joone Studios.

HAUNTS AGAINST HUNGER Food Drive 2009

Hunger remains a serious issue for many residents of Illinois, as almost a half-million people each year rely on food provided by the Greater Chicago Food Depository's network of pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. Working poor families, parents of young children and the elderly are among those who need our assistance to not go hungry.

In 2009, ChicagolandHalloween.com  is heading up the 2nd Annual "Haunts Against Hunger" Food Drive with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. If it is in your means, we will be taking donations of non-perishable food that will be donated from October 17th to October 31st just in time to help families for the Thanksgiving & Christmas season! Our headquarter drop site is at the Worth Halloween House in Worth, IL. Our kick off/media night is on October 18th, 2009. To find our network of collections sites go to chicagolandhalloween.com

If your decorated home or business is the Halloween hit of your area and you would like to help provide food for hungry people in the Chicago metropolitan area, we would love to have your home become part of the CLH "Haunts Against Hunger" team and become a "Collection Haunt" (drop off point). To become a "Collection Haunt" go to chicagolandhalloween.com to join the team!

This year we hope not only to entertain fellow Halloween lovers but to try and help our community as well. You can too!

We need items high in protein canned meats, beef stew, chili and peanut butter. Also needed are canned vegetables and fruits, rice, pasta and cereal. With your help, we can restock the shelves with food for hungry people. Thank you for joining us in the fight against hunger!

Once Again, Folks - New Site, New Everything : PLEASE DON'T IGNORE THIS POST

There appears to be some confusion about how old HauntedHouseChicago.com (prior to July 2009) user accounts work with the new site, so here's the answer: THEY DON'T. Your old login info doesn't work anymore; HauntedHouseChicago.com changed ownership last year and had to be re-engineered from the ground up.

The site is BRAND NEW, 100% re-built. Old usernames, passwords and listings are GONE. You MUST create a NEW user account, and all haunted houses that want to be listed MUST CREATE THAT LISTING. We will not do it for you.

The whole point of all this was to (a) get rid of the dozens of outdated listings for no-longer-existing attractions and (b) put the ability to edit haunted house and Halloween event information directly into the owners' hands. Please help us help you! List your haunted house, attraction or Halloween event!

We at DarkChicago.com are very pleased to present the all-new HauntedHouseChicago.com, just in time for the 2009 Halloween and haunted house season. Please bear with us as we get the site set up today - you may see some weird listings or wonky elements, but they'll be very temporary.

In the meantime, go ahead and create your user account, which will let you rate and review haunted houses during the season.

HAUNTED HOUSE OWNERS

We are starting the Haunted House Listings over from scratch this year, so please read the following carefully. YOU MUST ADD YOUR HAUNTED HOUSE YOURSELF. We've made it super-easy to add and maintain your own listings this year - all you have to do is create your account and make sure you hang on to your username/password so that you can update your listing(s) in the future!
  • FIRST: Click HERE to create your new account.
  • SECOND: Check the email address you entered and click the link in the email you'll receive to activate your account.
  • THIRD: Click HERE to create your haunted attraction's listing.
  • FOURTH: A HauntedHouseChicago.com administrator will review your listing and approve it, at which time your listing will go live on the site!
You'll be able to add your attraction's address, phone number, email address, a brief description and even a couple of photos. Better still, HauntedHouseChicago.com users will be able to see your attraction's location on a Google Map, right on your listing page (so PLEASE be sure to get that address entered correctly!).

Stay tuned for more announcements as we gear up for Halloween 2009!

Clive Barker Reinventing Halloween!

Legendary writer/director/artist/bon vivant Clive Barker announced on his Twitter account this evening that he is working with Disguise to create his own line of Halloween masks, a line he intends to expand each year:

I'm starting to get full-size sculpts for Halloween masks and costumes developed to give a wild, edgy look to my favorite holiday! In 2010 we'll start with The Dark Bazaar. Then we'll add characters to the mythology year after year - my designs for a whole new Halloween, with not a pumpkin in sight. I originate the characters as oil paintings. In 2011 we will get even darker, as we descend into The Pit.

I'm working with an awesome company called Disguise - great, creative people who want to give the holiday some bite, some fresh blood, some new Terrors. There will be big press stuff to follow. But you folks (Twitter followers) have been amazing to me during a really bad time in my life. You first!

Second Annual Chicago Ghost Conference

"The dead say nothing
And the dead know much
And the dead hold
Under their tongues
A locked-up story."
-Carl Sandburg

One of the city's most beloved poets, Carl Sandburg, knew a thing or two about being haunted. Each October, we attempt to unlock the "locked up stories" of the spirits of Chicago--and beyond--at the Midwest's premier ghost hunting event of the season.

The first Chicago Ghost Conference went down in history as the first ghosthunters' convention ever held in the city of Chicago. For the first time, field investigators, authors, historians, folklorists, artists, sensitives, and enthusiasts from every walk of life came together in one of the world's most haunted cities for a weekend of learning, discovery, and--of course--ghosthunting.

The 2009 conference promises to be even bigger and better. All are welcome, whether you have merely a ghost of an interest in the paranormal, are looking to celebrate Halloween in a unique way, or whether you're a seasoned ghosthunter actively engaged in the science of paranormal investigation.

Registration is now open! Our 2009 Conference headquarters will be the historic and storied Portage Theater on Chicago's Northwest side, just minutes from O'Hare airport and some of Chicago's greatest paranormal locations, including Robinson Woods and the former site of the John Wayne Gacy home. Special evening events on Friday will sell out early, including a special ghosthunters' tour of Chicago and other supernatural events you won't want to miss!
